Should I tip on pre-tax or post-tax amount? +
Most etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, as the server didn't provide the tax service. However, in practice, many people tip on the total (including tax) since the difference is small and rounding up is simpler. Either approach is acceptable.
Is a 20% tip standard now? +
20% has become the de facto standard for good restaurant service in the US, up from 15% a generation ago. This reflects rising costs and the increased importance of tips to service workers' incomes. For exceptional service, 25%+ is appreciated. For counter service or takeout, 10–15% is common but optional.
