What is FICA tax? +
FICA stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act. It consists of Social Security tax (6.2% on wages up to $168,600 in 2024) and Medicare tax (1.45% on all wages, plus an additional 0.9% on wages over $200,000 for single filers). Your employer matches your FICA contributions — so the total contribution is actually 15.3% of your wages.
How does 401(k) contribution affect my paycheck? +
Traditional 401(k) contributions are pre-tax, meaning they reduce your taxable income for federal and most state income taxes (but not FICA). Contributing 6% of a $75,000 salary ($4,500/yr) could reduce your federal tax bill by $990–$1,080 depending on your bracket, making the effective cost of saving less than the full contribution amount.
Which states have no income tax? +
Nine states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire (dividends/interest only), South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. If you live in one of these states, set state tax to 0%.
