How US Federal Income Tax Works

The US uses a progressive tax system, meaning different portions of your income are taxed at different rates. You only pay the higher rate on income within that bracket — not on your entire income.

What is the difference between effective and marginal tax rate? +
Your marginal rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income (your "tax bracket"). Your effective rate is the average rate on all your income — total tax divided by total income. Effective rate is almost always lower than the marginal rate in a progressive system.
What is FICA tax? +
FICA stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act. It includes Social Security tax (6.2% on wages up to $168,600 in 2024) and Medicare tax (1.45% on all wages, plus 0.9% additional on high earners). Your employer matches these amounts.
