What Is the FIRE Movement?
FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is a lifestyle and financial movement where practitioners aggressively save and invest — typically 50–70% of their income — to accumulate enough wealth to live off investment returns indefinitely, often decades before traditional retirement age.
The 4% Safe Withdrawal Rate
The "4% rule" comes from the Trinity Study (1998), which analyzed historical portfolio data and found that withdrawing 4% of your initial retirement portfolio per year (adjusted for inflation) had a 95%+ success rate over 30 years. For longer retirements (40+ years), many FIRE practitioners use 3–3.5%.
Or more conservatively: Annual Expenses × 33 (using 3% rule)
