Ideal Weight Formulas
There is no single universally agreed-upon ideal weight. Different formulas were developed for different purposes โ primarily for medical dosing calculations. They should be used as a general reference, not a strict target.
The Five Formulas Used
| Formula | Developed By | Originally For |
|---|---|---|
| Devine | B.J. Devine (1974) | Drug dosing in medicine |
| Robinson | Robinson et al. (1983) | Clinical nutrition |
| Miller | Miller et al. (1983) | General health |
| Hamwi | G.J. Hamwi (1964) | Diabetes management |
| Healthy BMI | WHO standard | Population health screening |
Which ideal weight formula is most accurate? +
No single formula is most accurate for everyone. The BMI-based healthy range (18.5โ24.9) is the most widely used clinically. For athletic or muscular individuals, the upper end of the BMI range or slightly above may be perfectly healthy. Body composition matters more than weight alone.
How do I determine my frame size? +
Wrap your thumb and middle finger around your wrist. If they overlap, you have a small frame. If they just touch, medium frame. If there's a gap, large frame. Alternatively, measure wrist circumference: women <5.5" small, 5.5โ5.75" medium, >5.75" large; men <6.5" small, 6.5โ7.5" medium, >7.5" large.
